Wing Chun, Martial Arts and Self Defense

How practical are throwing techniques (nagewaza) for self-defense or street-fighting? NOT VERY!

The Japanese themselves have a saying, “One year for newaza (ground technique), TEN YEARS for nagewaza (Throwing technique)”. It takes ten times as long to become proficient at throwing than it does at ground fighting.

Trying to throw a fully resisting, fighting adversary and pulling off a “clean” throw is VERY, VERY DIFFICULT.

People will INSTINCTIVELY grab, seize, claw and otherwise do all sorts of “spoiling” maneuvers when one attempts to execute a “throw”.

In all of the fights I have seen, I can recall ONLY three instances where one guy was able to pull off a clean solid throw. And this person was practicing Judo on an almost DAILY basis.

I’ve seen throws used in other situations but quite honestly they got the person into MORE TROUBLE than it was worth.

I will cite three classic examples of what it takes to become “skilled” enough to even attempt Nagewaza in a real street fight.

1. Masahiko ‘Judo” Kimura TRAINED upwards of NINE hours a DAY! He did thousands of repetitions of Uchikomi (fitting in) to develop just a COUPLE of reliable Nagewaza (Seoi Nage (Should throw) & O Soto Gari (Big leg reap)). Reading Kimura’s biography you will note that in his street fights and “vale tudo” matches as well, when he faced skilled boxers his reliance on Nage was still an “iffy” proposition.

Make no mistake..

KIMURA WAS AN ANIMAL!

2. Famed Judo legend Yamashita (explained at his recent seminar that it took THOUSANDS of repetitions of uchikomi AND the brutal three man drills to BEGIN to develop the skill to effectively employ throwing techniques.

3. And last but certainly not least is Yonezuka who ADVOCATES the use of ASHIBARAI (foot sweep) without GRABBING as the BEST overall and SAFEST (for you) method of slamming someone on their ass.

The other thing that pisses me off is the idea that JUJUTSU throws are somehow BETTER than JUDO throws for real combat. BULLSHIT. The only REAL difference between Judo and Jujutsu nagewaza is generally the manner of seizing the opponent. HOWEVER, a judoka can do this just as EASILY. But moreover, JUDO nage are PROVEN to be effective in REAL ADVERSARIAL COMPETITIONS. Sure you can talk about the old Jujutsu styles employing joint locks and strangleholds in conjunction with throwing BUT again, JUDO methods have been evolving in a far MORE real arena.

I have NEVER seen a Jujutsuka “pull off” any NAGEWAZA against even neophyte JUDOKAS or WRESTLERS! EVER.

And in a REAL street fight some of the NONSENSE that these people banter on about concerning the “COMBAT” application of these throws will get you F%^&&G KILLED!

The nonsense they preach on about SOUNDS “cool” but will FAIL in the REAL unscripted world.

Almost ANY attempt at REALLY slamming someone will invariably find BOTH of you on the ground. Hopefully, but CERTAINLY NOT ALWAYS, with you on top, then the fight goes ON. Against more than ONE opponent you HAVE BIG PROBLEMS!

Also consider the TACTICAL problems with KNOWINGLY turning your BACK into an ENEMY! And ANY one-legged type throw, i.e., Hane-goshi (Hip spring throw)/Harai-goshi (Loin throw)/O guruma (Big Outer Wheel) /Uchimata (Inner Thigh Throw) will INSURE that you BOTH hit the DECK.

The BEST methods I have seen and practiced for actually USING throwing techniques in self-protection came from Bruce Tegner. His concept of seizing the upper arms or shoulders with both hands and then GOING TO WORK on the opponents legs with a BARRAGE of LOW HARD KICKS and THEN executing a throw is the ONLY approach that seems to have validity and is viable. AND that approach is what REAL kuzushi is all about.

Another topic loaded with BULLSHIT. KUZUSHI is NOT a subtle maneuvering to “break balance” in THE REAL WORLD nor is it evident in almost ANY real Randori or Shiai. MORE esoteric fantasy crap. If I want to “break your balance” I’ll do it by KNOCKING THE S$%T out of you!

Lastly, DON’T believe the BULLSHIT about Judo throws “being SAFE” for the opponent. HORSES#$T! With SUFFICIENT practice you can “land” a guy on his HEAD, NECK or shoulder.

What makes Judo throws SEEM safe is the practice of UKEMI, the use of TATAMI and the LACK of intent in F!@#$%G up your training partner.

Check out Koizumi’s book on throws. He explains very well how a Dojo “safe” throw can be executed on the STREET with devastating results by a simple change in the direction of the “pull” done by the hands and wrists.

Instead of “heaving” your man over and directing him INTO a breakfall, you JUST pull STRAIGHT down and DRIVE him head first into the ground.

The DOERS KNOW the difference between real and chickenshit. The pontificators present ONLY a “shell” that has NO REAL SUBSTANCE, just “warrior fantasy appeal”.

They are blinded by their own BULLS@#T.

Las Vegas – Types of Self Defense Products

Posted by wingman On October - 24 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

You decided you need some kind of self defense device to protect yourself from possible crime situation. But with so many defense gadgets on the market it’s not an easy choice. Read on to find out the difference between self defense products, how they work and which one meets your needs most.

There are two main categories of defense items: pepper sprays and stun guns.

Pepper sprays. The active ingredient in pepper sprays is oleoresin capsicum, commonly referred to as OC. OC is a natural, oily, resin-like substance derived from hot peppers, the same peppers used to “heat up” spicy foods. Pepper sprays induce an almost immediate burning sensation of the skin and a burning, tearing, and swelling of the eyes. If spray is inhaled, the respiratory tract becomes inflamed resulting in a swelling of the mucous membranes lining the breathing passages and temporarily restricting breathing to short, shallow breaths.

Many people ask what’s the difference between mace and pepper spray. Mace is just a brand name. The company Mace International manufactures self defense sprays and security & surveillance devices. There are other companies that manufacture pepper sprays but in my opinion Mace has the most powerful spray – Triple Action pepper spray. It combines OC pepper and CN tear gas which causes profuse tearing, an intense burning sensation to the face and disorientation. CN tear gas is an extremely strong irritant.

Stun Guns. The way a stun gun works is by interrupting the communication signals from the brain to the body. A stun gun does not harm a person permanently; it only temporarily disrupts the way our body functions. A stun gun won’t cause damage in the long run because the electricity that it delivers into a person’s body is very high voltage but low amperage electrical charge. In this way, the charge is not intense enough to cause any long term damage to the person. Voltage range is between 80,000 and 900,000 volt at a rate of three milliamps.

So when you press the stun gun against a person and deliver the shock to them, a few things happen contributing to their following [stunned] condition. The electric shock delivered by the stun gun will combine with the electric signals from the brain and this will confuse your body and make it hard to move. Another effect the stun gun can have is causing a person to do excessive amounts of work directed towards nothing in a particularly short period of time. This will use all of the persons energy so that they will temporarily be unable to do anything.

When triggered, the stun gun emits a bright electrical blast that is quite intimidating and makes a very loud popping noise that will attract the attention of anyone within earshot.

So what to choose? Stun gun or pepper spray? For jogging, walking on the streets I’d say pepper spray, since it’s more compact than a stun gun and easy to carry. Cell phone stun gun can be used if you don’t want anyone to know you have a self defense device. If you are in a car, stun baton can be useful, since you can stick it out the window into an attacker’s face. Most crimes happen in the dark and in that case flashlight stun gun with alarm can be used. Pepper foam is good for indoor use because it produces less fumes than pepper spray.

It’s a pretty well-known fact that most fights get taken to the ground.

And one of the scariest things in the world can be when a very large person — 200 pounds or more — pins you to the ground with all their weight, slowly suffocating you to death. Cutting off your air, your oxygen and your will to win.

Luckily, there are a couple fool-proof things you can do in a case like this guaranteed to get someone off you fast — regardless of your size, strength or skill level.

The first thing you can do is simply bite the guy. Preferably on the neck. I know the thought of doing this isn’t pleasant. But if your life is on the line, you just have to do it.

Another thing you can do, if you can move your hands, is rake your attacker’s eyelids with your thumbs. In other words, just take your thumbs and press them right into his eye lids…and rake away.

Now, neither of these “moves” is complicated and yet, they both work like gangbusters.

Why?

Because, when you bite someone on the neck or try to rake their eyelids 99% of the time the person will try to put as much distance as possible between the two of you.

This is mostly instinctual and practically automatic. Even for the strongest and toughest people in the world.

Reason why is because the neck and eyes are among the most vulnerable parts of the body.

That’s why wild animals will many times go for the neck or face. And why we naturally defend those two areas when attacked.

It’s a built in mechanism for our survival. And the best martial arts and self defense experts in the world know how to exploit these instincts…and use them against their attackers.

Martial Arts – Self Defense – Parking Lot Safety

Posted by wingman On October - 16 - 2007 ADD COMMENTS

There is nothing more impressive than shopping in a mega mall with more stores than you can visit in a year. The malls get bigger and bigger every year. With more square footage and more stores comes bigger parking lots. Bigger parking lots mean more and more customers have to park what seems like forever away from the final destination. It is good exercise for sure to make that trek however it is fraught with potential risks among them are theft, vandalism, rape, assault, robbery and even kidnapping.

Unfortunately, predators salivate at the thought of seeing a woman by herself late at night in a near empty parking lot. It is just too much of a temptation. A woman in those circumstances is virtually helpless.

Here are some tips to avoid potential trouble for women’s self defense and parking lot safety.

1. Lock your car on arrival. Keyless entry is best for time savings.
2. Park as close to your destination as possible.
3. If help is available, make sure you take advantage of it. Most grocery stores still offer his service.
4. Try making most shopping trips during the day.
5. Be aware of your surroundings. Is the parking lot well lit? Are there areas where a predator could hide?
6. Listen to that inner voice. It is better and wiser to be safe than sorry. If you don t feel comfortable get a manager or security guard to go with you.
7. Upon approaching your car, look around, in, underneath and next to your car. Last week I heard of a woman who had her foot licked by a pervert as she was trying to get into her car. Be suspicious of a van next to your car.
8. Once inside the car, quickly lock all doors. Most people let their guard down once inside their car.
9. If you are alone wait until others walk by and join them.
10. Sorry to say but avoid strangers.
11. Carry some non lethal self defense weapons like a stun gun or pepper spray or some type of personal alarm.

Distractions are plentiful when shopping. It is so easy to become engaged in something else and not be aware of your surroundings. Especially with children, the possibilities of harm seem to grow the further away you are from the store. Be prepared and carry some non lethal self defense weapons like a stun gun or pepper spray. Self defense personal alarms can be useful as well. It is too easy to believe nothing will happen to you. Remember to trust your judgment-you can t ever be too cautious.
