Karate Self Defense Training

Posted by Guest Author On August - 31 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Just about every knows the martial art of karate as one of the most popular methods of self defense training in the United States and throughout the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. The Karate Kid movies of the 1980s did much to popularize the martial arts techniques and the discipline as a whole.

Karate is a martial art developed in the country of Japan which includes many different training levels. It is seen by different practitioners as an art form and a method of self defense. As with other martial arts, Karate does not solely rely on physical techniques such as kicks, blows, strikes, holds, and takedowns. It also integrates various mental elements and training in leadership skills.

The martial arts practice of Karate is built on different patterns, forms, and interpretations. Parts of the system include forms (called kata), attitude (known as kokoro), and sparring (also called kumite). When using kata, practitioners use a sequence of martial arts moves that translate into the principles of combat attack. Similarly, kumite incorporates grappling and kicking techniques that are commonly used during Karate sporting events and tournaments. Finally, kokoro is known as the center of Karate. Users of Karate cannot further their improvement without character and a heart for the sport.

These days many youth and small children are trained in the sport of Karate and it is usually seen in such a connotation. However, it has its beginning as a true self defense martial art. Early on, only 3 obi betls were used to denote ranking in Karate. Three colors were used: black, brown and white, and each color level was divided in several sublevels. With increasing popularity, many more colors were eventually introduced into the sport.

History of Karate

Karate’s roots were established during a time of extreme political turmoil and wars. Shotokan Karate was founded by a man named Gichin Funakoshi, and he is given much credit for helping to spread the use of Karate across the main islands of the nation of Japan. Okinawa marked the beginning of the discipline in 1936 when many Karate masters came together. The masters of Karate included men like Kentsu Yabu, Chotoku Kyan, Chojun, Chomo Hanashiro, Shinpan Shiroma, Genwa Nakasone, Choryo Maeshiro, and Choshin Chibana.

The city of Okinawa and the surrounding region was important to the development of Karate because it was the nation’s political center. The kingdom was rules by Sho Hashi, who had banned the use of weaponry throughout the area. It was this weapons ban that led people to begin developing unarmed combat and self defense training.

In the years to come Karate increased exponentially in its popularity. Perhaps the early founders of the discipline would be surprised at how many have come to embrace its teachings. Now karate is offered in small towns and large cities across the globe, and it is practiced by women, children, and seniors as well as men. It has even been included in the Olympic Games.

Best Way To Stay Safe

Posted by Guest Author On August - 29 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

In cities and towns all around the world, people are beginning to ask themselves what they can do to be safe.  What are the best forms of martial arts for self defense, they ask.  What times of day are safest to go out and about; what neighborhoods should be avoided?  These may be thoughts that you have entertained yourself.

The truth is, there are tons of resources for martial arts and self defense out there.  And the truth is, there is no RIGHT program above all others.  What is really important, if you are serious about gaining personal safety and power, is that you arm yourself with knowledge.  Knowledge is power; everybody knows that.

To study self defense,  you first need to look into a few different programs.  It cannot be assumed that any martial arts class is going to turn you into a lean mean fighting machine.  Many martial arts studios are set up to teach for sport.  But the average customer doesn’t know what is for sport and what is for true self defense and can therefore be fooled.   One clue:  Any martial arts studio with “Do” in the name is sport; “Do” means “sport”.

If sport is not what you’re after, you could consider a real combat self defense course.  These can be in the form a combat self defense boot camp or even in the form of a DVD program.  Self defense comes in many forms; and it’s wide open so you’re sure to find a program that suits your personality and your lifestyle.  Combat self defense isn’t the only option available, although there is a lot that you can learn in this type of program.

Don’t assume that you are too mild mannered to learn self defense at all.  EVERY person can and should learn self defense.  Why would you choose to let a bad guy get the best of you?  With just a few learned moves, you can effectively get out of a wrist grab or even a grab from behind.

Self defense is also not only about learning moves.  Part of self defense is learning to avoid danger and how to deal with it properly if it does walk up and stare you in the face.  Self defense can include learning to improvise weapons both at home and on the street.  In short, it’s about doing all that you can to ensure your safety no matter where you are.

Self defense is also not only something that you use outside the home.  It is important that you take safety precautions at home as well.  This includes looking around before getting out of the car; closing your garage door as soon as you drive in; and not opening the door to strangers.   Self defense at home can mean that you have an alarm system installed, or that you have locks placed on downstairs windows.  Locks are sold at hardware stores and are easy to install.

Your personal safety is up to you to ensure.  Luckily, there are plenty of steps you can take to do just that.

Effective Self Defense Techniques In A Pinch

Posted by Guest Author On August - 28 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Think that it’s martial arts moves that will get you out of a tough situation?  If you do, you would be partially right.  Many people learn martial arts moves as a way to increase their personal safety.  However, this is just a part of the entire picture and will only go so far in keeping you safe as you travel through your life.

Self defense techniques MAY include some martial arts moves, but they don’t HAVE to.  Let’s look at some of the most important things you can do to get out of a fight; or get through one if you find that you have to fight off an attacker or aggressive opponent.

The first thing to keep in mind is that one of the best self defense techniques of all time is that of a calm demeanor.  There is no beating the ability to stay calm in any given situation.  And..this is the hardest thing to master when you are faced with a potential fight or attack.  However, to increase your personal safety, keeping your wits about you is a must.  Maintaining calm can give you the power to diffuse a situation; and can help you think clearly if you have to fight your way out.

It is also important to keep in mind that it is not the worst thing in the world to take a hit.  While your main objective in self defense is to get away; you have to consider the possibility that you may be hit.  In fact, this is how many violent crimes START; the victim is unaware of any impending violence.   Being caught off guard is horrible, yes; but if you can remain calm and take a hit and then get back in the game, you still stand a chance.

In a street fight or violent crime, you have to realize there are no rules.  This can work in your favor because you can employ any means necessary to get away from an attacker.  Anything is a weapon if you know what to look for and how to use it.  This is the sort of thing that you learn in a self defense class.  Martial arts classes are great for exercise and for gaining fitness and focus; but they will not teach you to improvise weapons to use for self defense.

If you have to fight off an attacker, you’ve got to know what to do.  This makes perfect sense because in most attacks, the attacker is bigger and stronger than his victim.  This fact alone can shake your confidence and make it hard to maintain the necessary calm demeanor.  By learning self defense, not just martial arts moves, you gain the necessary skills to know what to do and just how to do it.
