Ah, the age old problem. Many people will continue to train year round to learn fighting techniques. Things such as boxing, MMA, all of these are fighting techniques designed to be used in competition sport. But can you really use these techniques for proper self defense? Let’s see what we can find out when we look at that exact question.
First, we’ll look at some of the more common fighting techniques. The first technique is the common jab. The cross punch usually follows the jab, so now we have two staple techniques. Another common technique used in fighting is the round house kick. You can temporarily cripple your opponent when you use these devastating kicks properly. These are the three staple fighting techniques we will talk about today.
First up, is the jab. Do jabs have much use as a proper self defense technique or are they simply useful only as fighting techniques? Well, the truth is they are not very useful at all in self defense situations. Jabs are used as a quick strike in competitive sport versus a full out self defense blow. In a real life fight, a jab would not be very useful because most fights are over in just a few seconds.
Next up is the cross punch. Cross punches can be extremely useful fighting techniques, or they can be used as self defense techniques. This is because a cross punch is a very powerful strike which can take out an attacker very easily. If placed properly one or two cross punches can take down even the strongest man. So a cross punch can be used as either, making it a good technique to practice.
Finally, how about a roundhouse kick? Can roundhouse kicks be used as proper self defense techniques or are they strictly for fighting? Well, the answer is yes and no. Roundhouse kicks to the head can be very dangerous and can potentially put you in a very bad situation. However, a properly placed roundhouse kick to the groin can be an instant fight winner. You’ll be good to go if you make sure you don’t kick above the belt.
So there you have it. As you can see, not all fighting techniques can be used as self defense techniques, but almost all self defense techniques can be used as fighting techniques.
