It would seem that thinking about personal safety on your college campus would be commonplace. But the reality is that the majority of college students give very little thought to actions that will keep them safe – or put them in danger – as they walk from one place to another.
College is full of fun and exciting experiences and should be a time in life that you remember with fond memories. In order to ensure you have only the best memories, take some time to find out about self defense training. Sometimes this term is misspelled self defence training; regardless, you will do well to learn at least some self defense moves.
Self defense is not all about what moves you can pull off if someone were to grab you. It is just as much about avoidance as anything else you can learn. On campus, the best way to avoid a dangerous situation is to travel in groups. Even if you do not have people you know to walk with, you could tag along behind other students who may also be headed in your direction. This is especially important to do at night, when there is little light in parking lots around campus.
If you walk alone during daylight hours, proper self defense technique would be to maintain awareness. Just because it is light out does not mean that you are completely safe. Criminal behavior can occur any time of day and if you are not aware of your surroundings and your own behavior, you can become a target without knowing it.
The best way to stay aware is to make sure you have all items in place before leaving class. If you are walking sidewalks stuffing papers into your bag or pulling money or your iPod out, you are not aware of what is going on around you. Furthermore, you are showing the world the valuables that you carry in your book bag. It is important to keep your valuable belongings hidden from sight as much as possible. When you need to pay for any items, either on campus or off, be careful to pull out only the bills you need to pay for your item. Do not pull out a large wad of money to count in the open. This is a surefire way to become a target for robbery.
While a self defense class or some sort of training is highly recommended for all women; there are many self defense techniques that you can employ right away. Carrying your cell phone is a great way to stay safe – as long as you are not USING it as you walk around in public places. If you are walking from your car to class and you are talking or texting, you cannot see what else is going on in the parking lot. Your phone should stay in your hand and should be programmed with campus security and 911 in case you need help quickly.
College safety requires you to know self defense. Just remember that this comes in many forms and there are ample avoidance techniques that are just as effective as a good kick to the groin.
